I began researching my genealogy about five years ago when I lived in Washington, D.C. I don't know which relative was calling me, but this journey has not only enlightened my personal history, but the history of all Natives and Africans living in America. While following links on the Internet, I have also learned about the legal battles our ancestors were waging when my high school history books described slaves as lowly uneducated workers. Even though I began my research to discover my family history, I came to realize how we all are connected and that we are all our brothers' and sisters' keepers. Tiger Woods may think he wrote the book on mixed heritage, but he is not the only "mixed" American. In fact, I do not believe there is one American family who does not have at least two to three ethnic groups in their bloodline. I choose not create a separate category to describe myself and my family--I consider myself to be a Black woman with a very rich heritage, which consists of African, Jamaican, Irish, Scottish, Creek, Cherokee and English (so far). I created this page and dedicate it to my family, your family and the search for history and truth. |
